Gothic Quarter Tours

The Gothic Quarter with Kids: Which Tours Work at Which Age

Palms and the central fountain of Plaça Reial

The short answer. Yes, the Gothic Quarter works with children, and most daytime walks welcome them. The best fit for small children and prams is the old-town and Gothic Quarter walk: under-twos go free and ages 3 to 8 get 30% off. Older children love the ghost walk. Skip the tapas walks with kids, and note that Segway riders must be 16.

The quarter is free to walk and full of things children notice: geese in a cathedral, Roman columns in a courtyard, a square with palm trees. The catch is the tours. Some welcome prams and discount children; others are built for adults with a glass in hand. This post sorts them by age so you can book the right Gothic Quarter tour for your family.

With babies and prams

The lanes are paved in stone and narrow, but most of them are flat. A pram is manageable on most routes, and some walks say outright that they are stroller accessible.

The old-town and Gothic Quarter walk is the one to book. Its route is wheelchair and stroller accessible, it lasts two and a half hours, and children under two join free. It crosses La Rambla into La Boqueria, which buys you a snack stop halfway.

  • Bring a light pram rather than a heavy one; some lanes are tight.
  • Go in the morning in summer. August afternoons in the lanes are hot.
  • Carry water and snacks. Food and drinks are not in the fare.
Useful tip. Book the morning start. Children are fresher, the squares are quieter, and you have the afternoon free for a nap or the beach.

With children aged 3 to 11

This is the easy age for the Gothic Quarter. A two-hour walk is about right, and the stories hold their attention if the guide is good.

On the old-town walk, ages 3 to 8 pay 30% less. The bike or e-bike tour is the other good choice for families who ride. It starts at the fountain in Plaça Reial, runs three hours past the Cathedral, the Arc de Triomf and the seafront, and offers helmets and child seats on request.

Free things to add on your own:

  1. The Cathedral's geese. They live in the cloister. The cultural visit costs €16 for adults, and large families pay €14 each with their documents.
  2. The Temple of Augustus. Roman columns in a courtyard on Carrer del Paradís, free to walk in.
  3. Plaça Reial. Palms, a fountain and room to run.
  4. MUHBA on a Sunday afternoon. The city history museum is free for under-16s, and free for everyone on Sundays from 15:00. Children walk through the Roman town under Plaça del Rei.
Did you know? Under Plaça del Rei you can walk through a Roman laundry and dye house from the second century and a garum factory from the third. Garum was a fish sauce, which usually wins over a ten-year-old.

With teenagers

Teenagers tend to want either a bit of fear or a bit of speed.

For fear, book the ghosts and legends walk. It lasts ninety minutes, runs in the evening, and tells the quarter's darker history: murders, executions and hauntings. One family found it spooked their child and taught them a lot. It is not for anyone with a heart condition.

For speed, the Segway tour works from age 16. Riders must be 16 or over under the city's rules, so the operator puts riders aged 12 to 15 on e-bikes instead. The lowest Segway fare, from $3, buys a five-minute test drive; the full rides cost more. The bike tour takes the whole family at once.

Tours to skip with children

The tapas walks are made for adults. Wine is poured at every stop, and infants get a seat but no food in the fare. The tapas and taverns walk is not recommended for anyone under 18 and does not take prams.

Some small-group walks also run longer without restroom breaks. If your children are small, ask before you book anything over two hours. For a night out on your own, the tapas walks are compared on Gothic Quarter food tours.

Booking tips for families

  • Book the children as children. The discount on the old-town walk applies at checkout, so pick the right age band rather than paying adult fares.
  • Keep free cancellation. Most walks let you cancel free up to 24 hours ahead, which matters when a child wakes up unwell.
  • Check the length against nap time. Walks run from ninety minutes to three hours; day tours run up to eight.
  • Travelling with a wheelchair user as well? The old-town walk suits both, and Barcelona Cathedral's Santa Eulàlia gate on Carrer del Bisbe is its accessible entrance.

Evenings with children

Barcelona eats late, and so do its tours. The tapas walks start at 17:00 or 18:00, and most restaurants fill well after that. With small children, the easiest evening is an early dinner of your own and a short walk through the lit squares.

Plaça del Rei is floodlit after dark, and Plaça Reial is lively with its palms and fountain. Both are an easy stroll from the Cathedral, and neither needs a ticket. If your children are old enough for the ghost walk, it makes a good first evening, and you can compare it with the tapas evenings in Gothic Quarter at night.

Keep valuables zipped away in the evening crowds on La Rambla, and agree a meeting spot in each square in case you get separated. Plaça Reial's central fountain is an easy one for children to find.

Plan the day around the children

Keep it short. A two-hour walk in the morning, a snack in La Boqueria, and a free Roman stop after lunch is a full day for a seven-year-old. The meeting place for each walk is on Gothic Quarter tour meeting points, and the nearest metro stops and access notes are on visiting the Gothic Quarter.
