Do you need a ticket for the Gothic Quarter?
No. The Gothic Quarter is a public district of streets and squares in Barcelona's old city, with no gate and no opening time, and there is no Gothic Quarter entrance fee. You pay for a guide if you want one, and for the interiors that charge, such as Barcelona Cathedral's cultural visit.
How much does it cost to go inside Barcelona Cathedral?
€16 per person for the cultural visit. Students up to 25, large families and single-parent families pay €14 with documents checked at the ticket office, and visitors with a disability of 33% or more go in free. Group tickets are €8 per person.
How much is a Gothic Quarter walking tour?
Most group walks cost between $15 and $41 per person. A walk that adds sangria, a private walk with your own guide and the tapas evenings cost more, and every price is per person rather than per group.
Do Gothic Quarter tours include entry to the Cathedral?
No. The walks show you Barcelona Cathedral from the square and the lanes around it, and none of them sells the interior. If you want to go in, the cultural visit is €16 and you can do it before or after your walk.
What does paying €44 to the guide mean on a day tour?
Some day tours that add the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell do not include those tickets in the fare you book. The operator buys them in advance and you pay the guide €44 per person on the day. Read the Excludes line before you book, and bring the money.
Are drinks included on the tapas tours?
Yes. The tapas and wine walks pour a drink at every stop, usually local wine, with cava or vermouth on some. The sangria walk includes sangria but serves no food, so treat it as a walk with a drink rather than a meal.
Do I tip the guide?
It is up to you. Gratuities are listed as excluded on almost every tour, which means the fare does not include one. A few euros per person is common when the guide has done a good job.
Is the Temple of Augustus free?
Yes. The Temple of Augustus, four Roman columns on Carrer del Paradís that belong to the Barcelona City History Museum, is free to see. The columns stand on the low hill where the Roman colony of Barcino was founded.
Booking and cancellation
Can I cancel a Gothic Quarter tour?
Almost always. Most tours refund in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start. One walk, run by the city's tourist board, is non-refundable and cannot be changed, so check the cancellation line on your tour before you pay.
Do I need to book in advance?
For the busiest walks and the tapas evenings, yes. Small groups fill, especially in summer and at weekends. Book a few days ahead, and use the free cancellation window if your plans are still moving.
Is there a Gothic Quarter private tour?
Yes. You can book a private walk with a local guide for your party only, and several group walks offer a private option at checkout. A private guide also lets you set the pace and choose what to linger over.
Can I book a tour for a large group?
Up to a point. Barcelona limits guided tourist groups in Ciutat Vella, the old-city district, to 20 people, so a bigger party needs more than one group. Ask the operator before you book for more than a handful.
What happens if my tour does not reach its minimum?
Some walks run only with a minimum number of guests. If yours does not, the operator offers you another date or a full refund. The minimum, where there is one, is stated on the tour.
Is my booking confirmed straight away?
Yes, confirmation arrives when you book. Your voucher carries the meeting point, the start time and the operator's own contact number, so keep it on your phone.

Each walk meets somewhere different: beside Plaça de Catalunya, at the tourist office on Pla de la Seu by the Cathedral, on Plaça de Sant Jaume, on La Rambla, in Plaça Reial or in El Born. Your voucher gives the exact spot and what to look for.
How long is a Gothic Quarter walking tour?
Between ninety minutes and three hours. Tapas walks run two to three and a half hours, and the day tours that add the Sagrada Familia last six to eight hours, of which the Gothic Quarter takes about an hour or an hour and a half.
Is there a Gothic Quarter night tour?
Yes. A ghosts and legends walk runs through the lanes after dark in ninety minutes, and the tapas and wine walks have an evening start. The quarter is lit and busy in the evening, which suits a walk of stories.
What if I am late for my tour?
Arrive ten minutes early. Some operators start on time and treat anyone more than ten minutes late as a missed tour. If you are running late, call the number on your voucher before the start.
Do any tours pick up from my hotel?
Only some of the day tours, the ones that travel by coach or car to the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell. Every walk and tapas tour meets at a named spot in the old city, and you make your own way there.
When is Barcelona Cathedral open to visitors?
The cultural visit runs 9:30 to 18:30 on weekdays, 9:30 to 17:15 on Saturdays and the eve of religious holidays, and 14:00 to 17:00 on Sundays and religious holidays. The last entry is 17:45 on weekdays and 16:30 on the other days.

Is a Gothic Quarter food tour worth it?
If you want dinner or lunch and the stories in one go, yes. The tapas and wine walks serve enough food for a full meal with a drink at each stop, in bars you would walk past on your own. If you only want the history, a plain walk costs far less.
Are Gothic Quarter tours suitable for children?
The walks are, and the ghost walk goes down well with older children. The tapas walks are for adults, with 18 as the usual age band. Segway riders must be 16 under city rules, and riders aged 12 to 15 are given e-bikes instead.
Are the tours wheelchair accessible?
Some walks say they are, and the tour details state it where they do. The quarter's lanes are narrow and paved in stone, with the odd step. Barcelona Cathedral's Santa Eulàlia gate on Carrer del Bisbe is the access for people with reduced mobility.
Can vegetarians join a tapas tour?
Usually, if you say so when you book: the tapas walks can adapt the tastings for vegetarians. Vegan and gluten-free diets are harder, and one tapas walk says it is not recommended for vegans, so check before you pay.
Do guides use loudspeakers in the Gothic Quarter?
No. The city bans loudspeakers for guided group explanations in Ciutat Vella and encourages radio guides instead, so a guide talks to you directly or through a headset.
What should I wear?
Comfortable shoes with grip, because the lanes are paved in stone and a walk covers a few kilometres. Barcelona Cathedral is a working church, so dress as you would for a service if you plan to go in.

What is the Gothic Quarter known for?

Is the Gothic Quarter really Gothic?
Much of it is medieval, and the Cathedral's cloister and choir date from the 14th and 15th centuries. Some of its most photographed details, though, were added or remade in the twentieth century, the neo-Gothic bridge on Carrer del Bisbe among them.
What happened at Plaça Sant Felip Neri?
An air raid on 30 January 1938, during the Spanish Civil War, hit the church of Sant Felip Neri while children were sheltering in it. The shrapnel marks are still visible on the church façade.
Where does the Gothic Quarter end and El Born begin?
At Via Laietana, the wide avenue on the quarter's eastern side. Cross it and you are in El Born, the district of Santa Maria del Mar and the Picasso Museum.
How do I get to the Gothic Quarter by metro?
Jaume I on line L4 and Liceu on line L3 are the nearest stops. From Plaça de Catalunya, served by L1 and L3, it is a short walk down to the Cathedral.
