Why the classic walk comes first
The Gothic Quarter is free to wander, and on your first afternoon that is exactly the problem. The lanes bend, the squares look alike, and you can walk past a Roman column without knowing it is there. This walk gives you the map in your head before you explore on your own.
It covers more than the quarter. Your guide takes you across La Rambla, which was a sandy riverbed outside the medieval walls, and into La Boqueria. From there you head back through Plaça Reial and up to Barcelona Cathedral. Then you cross into El Born for Santa Maria del Mar, the church its own parishioners paid for and built.
No entry ticket is part of the fare, and that keeps the price low. You see the Cathedral and Santa Maria del Mar from outside. Carrer de Fontanella to the Palau de la Música, stop by stop

Carrer de Fontanella 2, by the Movistar Centre
You meet at Carrer de Fontanella 2, just off the top corner of Plaça de Catalunya, next to the Movistar Centre. Look for a guide wearing the tour company's badge. From Catalunya metro station it is a two-minute walk.
The walk ends in El Born, near the Palau de la Música Catalana, so you finish in the old city rather than back at the start. Every other walk's meeting place is on Gothic Quarter tour meeting points.

- Wear shoes you can walk in for hours. The old city is paved in stone and the walk is on foot from start to finish.
