Barcelona Cathedral and its cloister, the bridge over Carrer del Bisbe, the royal palace on Plaça del Rei and the palms of Plaça Reial, by day and after dark. Every photograph comes from the operators who run a Gothic Quarter tour through these lanes.

The quarter photographs best in its narrow places. The lanes are too tight for a wide view, so the pictures that work look up: at the Cathedral's spires, at the carved tracery of the Pont del Bisbe, at the tower of arches over Plaça del Rei.

The Cathedral cloister is the quiet exception. Its garden of palms and magnolias sits inside pointed arches built in the 14th and 15th centuries, with a pond that is home to the Cathedral's white geese and a fountain from the mid-15th century.

After dark the stone turns gold under the street lamps. That is the hour of the ghost walk and the tapas evenings, and the reason both start then.
