How three hours of tapas become a meal
A tapas crawl on your own tends to go one of two ways. You order too little at the first bar and too much at the third, or you end up in the places on the main square. This walk fixes the order for you, and the food adds up to a proper meal.
A sample menu shows the range. Iberian ham and cheese with pan con tomate and red wine. A tortilla de patatas with homemade vermouth. Croquetas and patatas bravas with cava. Fried sardines with white wine, and on the fuller rounds canelons, black paella with prawns or slow- cooked Iberian pork cheek. What you eat on the day depends on the bar and the season.
The walking between stops is part of the point. On the evening route you begin at Plaça de Sant Jaume, where Barcelona's city hall and the Catalan government face each other. Your guide takes you through the Gothic Quarter for the first two stops, along Passeig de Colom and into El Born for the last. You finish by Santa Maria del Mar, with the bars of El Born all around you.
It works best early in your stay. You leave knowing what to order, and where, for the rest of your trip.
Your three hours from Plaça de Sant Jaume to Santa Maria del Mar
- Meet your guide. Plaça de Sant Jaume 6 in the evening, or La Rambla 97 at midday.
- Into the Gothic Quarter. Roman traces on the way to the first bar.
- The first tapas stops. Cured ham, cheese and pan con tomate, with wine.
- Along Passeig de Colom. A walk towards the sea side of the old city.
- El Born. The last rounds, with warmer plates and another glass.
- Santa Maria del Mar. You finish by the basilica, with El Born's bars open around you.

Where you meet depends on when you go. The evening walk starts at Plaça de Sant Jaume 6, the square between the city hall and the Palau de la Generalitat. The midday walk meets at La Rambla 97. Check which one your booking shows before you set out.
Midday walks start at 11:00 or 12:00 and evening walks at 17:00 or 18:00. Both end in El Born, by Santa Maria del Mar, a short walk from Jaume I metro. The meeting place of every other walk is on Gothic Quarter tour meeting points.
Know before you go: food, wine and timing
