The Cathedral's cultural-visit hours do not change with the season. What changes is how many people are in the lanes with you, and how hot the stone gets by the afternoon.

What is the Gothic Quarter like in winter?

Quiet, cool and at its most local. From November to March the day visitors thin out, the bars fill with people who live nearby, and you can stand under the Pont del Bisbe without waiting for a gap.

The days are short, so the lamps come on early and the lanes feel like evening by late afternoon. The Cathedral keeps the same hours all year. Bring a warm layer for the shaded lanes, where the sun rarely reaches in winter.

Is spring or autumn better?

Both work, for different reasons. Spring warms up as it goes: April can be cool and showery, May is mild and bright, and by June the heat and the crowds are building.

Autumn runs the other way. September is still warm and busy, with La Mercè in the squares, and October is mild and calmer. If you want long light evenings, pick late May or early June. If you want the sea still warm after your walk, pick September.

What is the best month to visit?

May or October. Both are warm enough to walk all day and sit outside at night, and both are quieter than high summer. April, early June and late September are close behind.

If you only care about space, January to March gives you the lanes almost to yourself. You will want a jacket, and a guided walk runs rain or shine.

Is August too hot for a walking tour?

Not in the morning or the evening. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, and the narrow lanes hold the heat through the afternoon. A walk from 10:00 to noon is comfortable; a walk at 15:00 is hard work.

Book a morning walk, rest in the afternoon, and come back out for an evening tapas walk or the ghost walk after dark. Carry water, and wear a hat for the open squares.

What is the best day of the week?

Tuesday to Friday. On those days the Cathedral's cultural visit runs its full weekday hours, 9:30 to 18:30, and MUHBA's museum at Plaça del Rei is open 10:00 to 19:00.

Saturday works too, but the Cathedral's visit closes at 17:15 and the lanes are busier. On a Monday, MUHBA's published hours do not apply, so plan the Cathedral and a walk instead.

What changes on a Sunday?

The Cathedral's cultural visit opens only from 14:00 to 17:00, with last access at 16:30. Religious holidays keep the same short hours.

MUHBA is free on Sundays from 15:00 and on the first Sunday of the month, but its Sunday opening hours are not published, so check on the day. On a Sunday, take a guided walk in the morning and go inside after lunch.

Which hour is quietest?

Before 10:00 and after dark. Early in the morning the lanes belong to delivery vans and people going to work, and you can photograph the Pont del Bisbe with nobody under it.

From late morning to late afternoon, groups and day visitors fill the main squares. After dark the day visitors leave, the lamps come on and Plaça del Rei is floodlit. That is when the ghosts and legends walk runs, from $15.

What is on in the quarter through the year?

Sant Jordi, in April. Catalonia's day of books and roses. Stalls line the streets, and the quarter is busy but good-natured.

The Christmas market, in December. The Fira de Santa Llúcia fills the area in front of the Cathedral with stalls of nativity figures and decorations.

The streets never close, but MUHBA's museum at Plaça del Rei does. It is shut on 1 January, 1 May, 24 June and 25 December, and its published opening hours cover Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 to 19:00 with last entry 45 minutes before closing.

Barcelona Cathedral's cultural visit moves to its short hours, 14:00 to 17:00, on religious holidays as well as Sundays. If your trip falls on a holiday, plan a guided walk for the morning and keep the interiors for the afternoon or the next day.

Which season suits a family?

Spring and autumn, and school holidays outside July and August if you can. Children tire fastest in the heat, and a two-hour walk on stone is easier for them in May or October than in August.

Whatever the month, go in the morning. The classic small-group walk takes strollers and charges children aged 3 to 8 less, and the ghost walk after dark suits older children who enjoy a scare. Under-16s go free at MUHBA all year. For a family in summer, walk early, rest through the afternoon, and save the stories for the cooler evening.

Do the tours run in the rain?

Yes, the walks run rain or shine. Rain is most likely in autumn and in spring, and it rarely lasts all day. Bring a light waterproof rather than an umbrella, which is awkward in narrow lanes.

A wet day is also a good day for the interiors. The Cathedral, MUHBA's underground Roman streets and the Picasso Museum are all under cover. Most tours cancel free up to 24 hours ahead if the forecast changes your mind.

How far ahead should you book in each season?

When is the light best for photographs?

Early morning and the blue hour after sunset. In the narrow lanes the sun only reaches the ground for a short time around the middle of the day, so for most of it the stone sits in soft shade, which suits photographs of carvings and doorways.

The squares are different. Plaça del Rei and Pla de la Seu are best in the low light of the early morning, before the groups arrive, and again when they are floodlit after dark. The Pont del Bisbe is at its emptiest before 9:00.

What about cruise days?

Barcelona is a busy cruise port, and on days when several ships are in, the old city fills from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. You cannot see the ship schedule from a tour listing, but you can dodge the effect: walk early, or book an evening tour.
